Preparing for Ramadan is an opportunity to instil a sense of excitement and spirituality within the family, especially during the month of Sha’ban. It is essential to involve children in this preparation so that they understand the significance of this holy month.

Spiritual Preparation:

The month of Sha’ban serves as a prelude to Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) used to fast more during Sha’ban to honour the month and ready himself for Ramadan. Families can emulate this by gradually introducing fasting days. This practice helps to adjust the body and mind for the coming fasting period.

Quranic Stories and Sunnah:

Discussing stories from the Quran with children kindles their curiosity and teaches them valuable lessons. Relating the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and his perseverance can be inspiring in the context of fasting and patience. In a similar vein, the stories of the Prophet’s companions, their dedication, and charitable acts during Ramadan encourage children to adopt these noble habits.

Delve into the life of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and explore his practices (Sunnah) during Ramadan. This can include his generosity, the importance he placed on communal prayers, and his way of breaking the fast, often with dates and water, which is a healthy practice children can adopt.

Historical Reflections:

Linking historical events to Ramadan makes the month more relatable and memorable for children. For instance, the significant battle of Badr and the revelation of the Quran occurred in Ramadan. Teach children the importance of Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Decree), believed to be the night when the Quran was first revealed. It’s a time when good deeds are believed to be significantly amplified.

Preparing the Environment:

Encourage children to be involved in decorating the home with Ramadan-themed crafts, which creates a festive atmosphere. This physical representation serves as a reminder of the sanctity and special nature of the coming month.

Charity and Community:

Emphasise the importance of giving during Sha’ban and leading up to Ramadan. Engage in community service or plan to support a charity during Ramadan. Acts of kindness and benevolence can be encouraged through storytelling from the Sunnah, solidifying the lessons in young minds.

The essence of this preparation is in nurturing an environment filled with love, anticipation, and eagerness to embrace the blessed month. By interweaving stories, sunnah, and historical facts into interactive preparation, Ramadan can become a spiritual adventure for the entire family, bearing valuable life lessons for the children.
