I WAS BORN 49 years ago.
My mother, a medical student at the time, recalls that she was really unwell with typhoid. Her professors weren’t sure if either of us would make it. We did.
My father recalls that he went for jumuah and on his return he met his son for the first time.
I don’t celebrate birthdays, but I see a year (hijri or the common era) as marking the passage of time.
It gives me an opportunity to remember and be thankful for the countless blessings Allah has bestowed upon me.
And a reminder that whilst only Allah knows how long I will live, I have most likely lived more years than are left to me.
So, it’s an opportunity to take stock of what I have done and what I need to do.
ٱقْتَرَبَ لِلنَّاسِ حِسَابُهُمْ وَهُمْ فِى غَفْلَةٍۢ مُّعْرِضُونَ
‘Closer and closer to mankind comes their Reckoning: yet they heed not and they turn away.’ (Anbiya 1)
And to make dua for a long life that is full of good deeds and not evil.
A man once asked: “O Messenger of Allah, which of the people are best?” The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘One whose life is long and his deeds are good.’ The man asked: ‘Which of the people are worst?’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘One whose life is long and his deeds are evil.’ (Tirmidhi)
