THE CALL TO guidance can come from many places. As parents, we are responsible for building the deen in our children, but we need to be open to the fact that they may call us to the truth at some point.
Likewise, for younger people, there is often great zeal and desire to save loved ones who may be in error. The frustration can lead to a call that is harsh. However, this ayah and others from this section, show how Ibrahim (as) called his father to the truth with kindness and respect. ‘O my father…’ he repeats as he passionately appeals to his father’s intellect with genuine concern. His father chose not to listen, and his heart hardened. That is a lesson that ours is to convey the message in the best way, whilst guidance comes only from Allah ﷻ.
Another point is that our dawah cannot ignore those closest to us. How many of us have parents, brothers, sisters, cousins, wives and children who know little of the deen we understand and promote? Should they be deprived of this dawah? Of course not. Instead, they should be supporting our dawah and gaining Allah’s ﷻ pleasure.
