This article provides a short summary of the key concepts on Islamic education as espoused
by Islamic philosopher Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas.

I do recommend reading the full article, “The Concept of Education in Islam,” as it provides a
different way of looking at education that we are use to and shows the richness of approach
that Islam takes. We can and should do things differently if we profess this faith.

Key Concepts

For Al-Attas there are six main concepts that define his approach to pedagogy in Islam.

  1. Religion (Din): Education in Islam is deeply rooted in religion, emphasizing the importance
of faith and spirituality in all aspects of life.
  2. Man (Insan): The human being is seen as a holistic entity, with education aimed at
nurturing both the spiritual and intellectual dimensions.
  3. Knowledge (Ma’rifah and ‘Ilm): Knowledge is not just about information but about
    understanding and wisdom.
It involves both the acquisition of knowledge (‘ilm) and the deeper understanding (ma’rifah).
In short our knowledge is used to better the world not used as a vehicle to simply get a job.
  4. Wisdom (Hikmah): Wisdom is the application of knowledge in a way that is beneficial and
    just.
The West and this country have a lot of clever people. Gifted, but that does not mean they
    are wise.
The advancement of the material and what the mind produces, must go hand in hand with
    why we produce it.
  5. Justice (‘Adl): Education should promote justice and fairness in society.
  6. Right Action (‘Amal and Adab): Education should instill proper conduct and manners.
Gaza and the horrors we see could never happen if the wise were in charge; as the
knowledge would used in a moral way.

Educational Process

Al-Attas discusses the methodology of scientific research and the study of nature along the
lines of Quranic interpretation (tafsir and ta’wil). He also emphasizes the Islamisation of
languages and its relation to the Muslim mind and worldview.

Educational Methods

In the West they have the three Rs.

In Islam we have the three Ts:
Tarbiyyah: This refers to the nurturing and upbringing of individuals, focusing on moral and
spiritual development.

Ta’dib: This involves the refinement of character and behavior.

Ta’lim: This is the formal process of teaching and learning.

Expanding on the process and method, and how this works in combination, we should be
able to identify clear distinctions in what our children and young adults should focus upon.
